Willamette Hop (Rooted/Mature plant)

£25.00

This old girl is a favourite among brewers around the world. Her bitter side can be used but is popular for her full body, adding flavour to your pint. Ideal for Ale, American Ales, Pale Ale, Brown Ale, English Ales, Porter.

What is a mature plant?
Usually you purchase a hop as a single rhizome (around £10), a cutting from a mature plant. We sell the whole mature plant at least 3 years old. If you are careful you can divide your plant (up to 4 times) before planting it to create more bines.  See picture as example.

Aroma: Specific aroma descriptors include floral, incense, and elderberry.
Info: 4.5-6.5% Alpha Acids • Domestic • Finishing Hop

All hops sold are organically grown and cultivated from our own hops on our farm here in the UK. We sell rhizomes with shoots, so you can be certain you have a healthy plant. We’ll send out your hop plant(s) when their shoots are ready – usually between March – May. Please note that we only have limited stock for each variety.

Description

Released in 1976 from the USDA breeding program, Willamette is a triploid seedling of English Fuggle. For years, it was the most widely grown aroma variety in the US. It is named after Oregon’s Willamette River which runs through the heart of the state’s hop growing region.

Considered a pillar of the US hops industry, Willamette is one of the most prolifically grown varieties in the US. First selected in Oregon in 1967, it received USDA accession in 1971 and was released the same year.

Willamette is a triploid aroma hop with its heritage being primarily derived from English variety Fuggle and Fuggle Tetraploid. It shares this same pedigree with its sister selection, Columbia. When brewed, Willamette features complex spiciness characterized by both herbal, floral and fruity notes.

Originally bred to replace Fuggle, it has excelled in popularity in recent times, particularly among craft brewers and accounts for approximately 20% of all commercially grown hops in the US today.
